crimson peak sequence

The sequence begins with a medium close up of the protagonist lying in bed in asleep then dollys out to a midshot, when she awakes she appears to be in pain or discomfort as she clutches her stomach, this instantly highlights a key convention of the horror genre with the theme of pain. there a continous sound of dog barking in the distance which creates a sense of uneasiness as that could be a earning sign for danger. There is then a straight cut to a wide shot to the girl distressed when she realises she is alone in her bed this shot creates a tense atmosphere with the surrounding darkness and the fact she is alone makes her seem almost vunerable to the audience as she looks unable to protect herself. The camera then tilts from a low angle of her standing when she gets of from her bed and the dog enters the room passing her; which cuts to a tracking medium close up of Edith wondering around with her candle light which begins to build suspense the dim light in the darkness possibly foreshadows that something creepy or sinister may occur which coincides with the horror/ thriller genre. The mise-en-scene shows the setting with traditional old fashioned furnishings which highlights the victorian era the film is set in. The trackinging midshot of the camera to a wideshot of the creaking door slowly opening as the girl with the diegetic noise of the girl gasping. As Edith begins to approach the open door with the candle light which could represent her bright innocience which contrasts with the sinsiter darkness of the night the camera tilts back to a midshot following from behing Edith; tracking her moving onto the landing and the digetic sound of her calling out for 'thomas'. theres contious diegetic sounds of dears slamming and creaking which creates great tension and fear which coincides with the genre of horror/ thriller. The camera continues to track Edith down the hallway at a medium long shot as she goes in search of her dog who she suspects is in a cuboard. The camera zooms into a medium close of the girl and the came tilts to a high angle of the doorknob as she reaches out slowly to open it. Afterwards the camera then reverse dollys into a low angle wideshot of the the girl looking down the hallway at the dog who she originally thought was in the cuboard this may unerve the audience as it seemed as if the dog were in the cuboard and the uncertainty of what is in there beging to build suspension. The camera suddenly cuts to a close up of Edith and again into a medium close up and two shot as a 'creature' appears in the cuboard and slams the door shut. The subject of monsters, demons and the dead is frequently used with in gothic horror genre which emphasises the horror of the scene. The camera tracks her as she jumps back and leans again to open the door this shows the dramatic irony as the audience knows whats in the closet but Edith is unaware amd further tension is created when the camera moves to a medium close up of her looking in the cuboard and the 'creature' is no longer there.
